DMCA Warnings for Schools

Has your school district received a DMCA warning for BitTorrent use on your school district network? I hope not. While content filters and firewalls typically block the effectiveness of BitTorrent programs–uTorrent, Vuze, Transmission–there is a silver lining to BitTorrent that has nothing to do with illegal content being shared by students or staff.

BitTorrent Sync application is completely free and developed by BitTorrent team, it is cross-platform application available for Linux/Windows/Mac/Android/iOS/Windows Phone. BitTorrent Sync is a simple tool that applies p2p protocol for direct live folder sync with maximum security, network speed and storage capacity. It works just like a file server you can sync and share unlimited files or folders across all your devices. Sync and share any file! Photos, videos, word docs, PDFs – any file big or small. Sync can handle any size and there are no limits. BitTorrent Sync for Android gives you access to all of your synced folders when you’re on the go! (Source)

In other words, BitTorrent Sync, enables you to skip cloud hosting providers like Dropbox, etc. and instead use your own equipment to access content on your iOS, Android, Windows/Mac/Linux devices. It works great and has NOTHING to do–except for that handy peer-to-peer protocol–with its evil older brother, BitTorrent used for pirating everything and anything.

If you haven’t given it a shot, and would like an easy way to keep content fresh on your mobile devices (or back them up automagically), then consider using BTSync. In fact, BTSync is handy when you want to move videos/photos off your mobile devices (like iPad, which when filled up can be difficult to “unload”).
